Diaper Bag Talk: Newborn Stage

Wondering what to pack in that super cute new diaper bag you got?? Heres my go to list for mommy's with a newborn filling their bag for the first time. The contents of your diaper bag will change but this is a good place to start:
  • diapers and wipes - take one per hour you will be gone - this is overkill but better safe than sorry
  • burp cloth - I pack one because the bib & extra blanket are backups when this is soiled.
  • changing pad - if your Diaper Bag is as awesome as you think it is, it probably came with one of these.
  • pacifier - even if youre against them: pack one. One (fussy) day it may look like a good idea to you.
  • A&D - this is my balm of choice after trying every cream, ointment, balm under the sun
  • little toy - rattle, teether, etc.
  • hand sanitizer - feel free to squirt this on every stranger that attempts to put their ever grubbing hands on your child.
  • bib - 'nough said.
  • extra change of clothes or 2 for baby - sleep n' plays are my fave for space effectiveness.
  • pair of socks - because you never know when one will mysteriously go missing.
  • extra blanket - for warmth, breastfeeding privacy, spit ups, leaky breasts, blow out diapers.
  • tylenol, mylicon drops, teething tablets
  • sunblock & hat for baby during summer
  • a shirt for myself - again: spit ups, leaky breasts, blow out diapers make this necessary
  • lipgloss for me :) ... just in case i realize that I left the house looking a COMPLETE mess.

and on top of all this - in my trunk, I would keep a bag wtih 2 diapers, an extra outfit for baby, wipes, extra blanket & a shirt for me. Somedays, this was a lifesaver when I was out & about and would have hated to either wear puke or go home. **You just have to remember to swap them out as they grow.
As they get older you'll drop the burp rag, the mylicon, and add on lots of random other things - right now with a 1 year old our load is much lighter. Every once in a while, the girls & I like to test fate and head to target sans the diaper bag. What can I say - we're rebels.

So you’re going to be a Boy Mom…

December 31, 2009 | Jill

I know that feeling, that excited but scared shitless feeling when the ultrasound tech tells you they see that extra bit of anatomy. “It’s a boy!” Your heart stops for a moment.

“But what will I do with a BOY?” you think to yourself, never daring to utter the thought out loud because, well, you *are* ultimately happy that it’s healthy… but… but… you don’t know how to raise a BOY.

You’re going to be a Boy Mom, and you’re going to be okay. In fact, you’re going to be great. You’ll love it so much that you’ll never be able to imagine NOT being a Boy Mom. It doesn’t matter that you LOVE being a girl, that you embrace every opportunity you get to dress up, do your makeup, get your nails done. It doesn’t matter that you much prefer shopping for shoes to browsing the sports store. Your love for all things zebra print, pink and soft does not mean you can’t and wont develop a love for “little man” clothes, toy trucks and OshKosh overalls paired with a toothy grin and muddy knees.

Being a Boy Mom means slobbery kisses and hugs that start with a running leap.

Being a Boy Mom means saving hundreds on clothes, even if only to spend that amount or more later in life on ER visits.

Being a Boy Mom means developing a keen eye for bugs and coming to terms with the fact that sometimes they can just be considered an extra helping of protein.

Being a Boy Mom doesn’t mean you won’t continue to be squeemish about things like spiders, it just means your squeels will be entertaining to the boy who taunts you by trying to eat one.

Being a Boy Mom means being the builder of block towers so big they lean and topple, leaving you both in stitches.

Being a Boy Mom means developing a very watchful eye while changing diapers, always on the lookout for that surprise pee stream attack.

Being a Boy Mom means having the pleasure of watching your son learn from his father, and then reminding his father that at a certain age they will start to repeat the F word, even if that F word is shouted at a TV during a sporting event.

Being a Boy Mom means you’ve been given the tremendous opportunity and challenge to raise someone who will grow up to be a respectful, loving and kind man. He may break hearts, but hopefully, with your guidance, he will do so gently, and ultimately he will make some lucky partner very, very happy.

Being a Boy Mom may mean giving up the fantasy of getting your nails done together after a frilly tea party, but it’s replaced by so many fun future memories that you can’t even begin to think up because right now you just don’t know what to do with a boy.

Don’t worry… it will come to you.

This was inspired by my reaction to learning that one of my best friends is having a baby boy. Immediately after she told me the news I teared up and replied, “You are going to LOVE IT! Boys love their mommas SO much!!” I was truly so happy for her, and I had to smile when her response was, “Really??” I so remember that feeling.  For some of us girls it’s a little scary venturing into the world of boys, but we just haven’t experienced just how wonderful it can be yet. I know she’s going to be an excellent Boy Mom, and I can’t wait to meet the little guy.

I’ve been a Boy Mom to Kendall for nearly 20 months

And I’d love to hear what being a Boy Mom or a Girl Mom means for you…

Dayton is spoiled already!

Thanks Nina Norma & Gramma Barbara! LOVE YOU!!!!

This Year ... (caution: sappy hormonally-induced post ahead)

This year we were living with my parents, after renting out our home, to buy a new home that would better fit our growing family. A home that would put us closer to family and help as we expect baby#3. We invaded their home almost exactly a year ago. My parents graciously let us take over 2 rooms, and much of their peace and quiet. They cooked for us, entertained the girls for us and put up with our loud ways.

This year we lost our dog, Daisy. Daisy was in Davids life when I met him and when we got married she became my "step-dogger". She accepted us unconditionally, as we did her. She was a total love. Dont hate me, but I never thought I even liked dogs until I met her. We were crushed to lose her and felt a huge void without her.

This year we embarked on completing our family. We got blood test results back with an elevated risk of downs and ended up doing an amniocentesis. After 2 long weeks we got the news that our baby was healthy without any abnormalities. The icing on the cake was when we learned we would have a son.

This year we got a new puppy. Shes silly and sweet, and although she isnt daisy (who pooped & pee'd OUTSIDE might I add) she is already a part of our family. We are in love!

This year I started a Physiology class. This class is taught by one of the most unorganized teachers Ive ever come acorss in my entire life! ha!

This year I quit my physiology class. I realized that while I probably could have stuck it out - I didnt have it in me - Id rather be home with my husband and my girls and there will be a time for it. And maybe that time isnt now like I had originally thought.

This year we bought a new home. We moved in a little over a week ago and are still making it our own. Its an older home with lots and lots of to-do's but the best part is that we feel at 'home'.

This year I realized that while life goes swirling on around you and plans go awry - the important things are already right there. They are those sweet bedtime kisses, the calls and emails from family & friends, the morning smiles and proud 5th graders that cant wait to tell you what theyve accomplished. Its been the ups & downs that make it life but its the people in it that make it worthwhile. What better blessing than family could there be?

... Did I mention its only March??

Baby #3 - 22 weeks

How your baby's growing:

At 11 inches (the length of a spaghetti squash) and almost 1 pound, your baby is starting to look like a miniature newborn. His lips, eyelids, and eyebrows are becoming more distinct, and he's even developing tiny tooth buds beneath his gums. His eyes have formed, but his irises (the colored part of the eye) still lack pigment. If you could see inside your womb, you'd be able to spot the fine hair (lanugo) that covers his body and the deep wrinkles on his skin, which he'll sport until he adds a padding of fat to fill them in. Inside his belly, his pancreas — essential for the production of some important hormones — is developing steadily.

How far along? 22 weeks

Total weight gain/loss?  15lbs last I checked.

Maternity clothes? Pictured: Liz Lange Maternity Tee & Liz Lange Maternity leggings.

Sleep: Doing really well still - don't even wake up to use the bathroom!

Best moment this week: David felt movement!

Food cravings: Chocolate - but who doesnt crave those mini cadbury eggs & PB eggs this time of year!?

Gender: BOY!

Movement: Hes a quiet guy so far, just little movements throughout the day.

What I am looking forward to: Spring

What I miss: ...?
